Superintendent Evaluation (2017-2018)

For the 2017-2018 School Year, the Board of Education ("Board") created and adopted a new evaluation process that includes ongoing checkpoints throughout the school year to keep the Board informed of performance and progress.‚Äč  The checkpoints include quarterly check-ins, a mid-year formative assessment, and a final evaluation.

The Mid-Year Formative Assessment is a mid-year check-in where the Board and Superintendent have a formal conversation about performance to date, progress on priorities, and areas of strength or opportunities for improvement. At its January 18, 2018 general business meeting, the Board conducted its first formative assessment of Superintendent Christina Kishimoto pursuant to the Board's new superintendent evaluation process. The Board gave Superintendent Kishimoto an overall rating of "effective" for the five-month period covered by the formative assessment and will reassess her performance during the final evaluation near the end of the school year.  Click here to view the Board's mid-year formative assessment of the Superintendent.

Stakeholder Feedback Preparation

Stakeholder feedback preparation is the point in time when the Superintendent and Board develop a list of questions and identifies internal and external respondents that seek to inform the Superintendent and Board of the community's perceptions as to the successes and challenges of Hawaii's public education system, help the Superintendent develop and improve future performance, and build an understanding of the educational priorities of stakeholders.  This is not an evaluation of the Superintendent, but rather a data point that the Board and Superintendent can reflect on to use and co-create leadership development and action plans to imprve and address concerns.  At its March 1, 2018 general business meeting, the Board approved a list of questions and respondents, as shown here.  Note that the Board requested the addition of a respondent from Kauai to the list provided.

Monitoring Progress on Superintendent Priorities (3rd Quarter)

The Board monitors the progress of the Superintendent's Priorities (the goals the Superintendent focuses on in any given year) on a quarterly basis.  At its March 1, 2018 general business meeting, the Superintendent provided the Board with an update on her goals of:  (1) ensuring the full implementation of the Board and Department Joint Strategic Plan and submittal of the Every Student Succeeds Act ("ESSA") state consolidated plan; (2) give critical importance to closing the achievement gap; and (3) improve the data-drive devision-making and priority-setting processes at the Board, Superintendent, State, Complex Area, and Principal levels.
