SUPERINTENDENT JOB DESCRIPTION

SEARCH COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS JOB DESCRIPTION
After conducting a comprehensive takeholder outreach process, the Search Committee provided its findings and recommendations regarding the superintendent job description. The findings and recommendations can be viewed here. The Board also approved a general timeline for the search process, which, in effect amended the May 20, 2021 timeline for the search process so that the Board is scheduled to select a superintendent in May 2022 instead of March 2022.
SEARCH COMMITTEE FORMS ADVISORY GROUP
On January 20, 2022, the Search Committee notified the Board that it had formed its Advisory Group and was planning on meeting with the Advisory Group and focus groups to get feedback on the education system’s greatest needs, areas of growth, and desired outcomes to develop a superintendent job description and competencies.
BOARD ACCEPTS GRANTS FUNDS FOR NASBE SERVICES
At its October 21, 2021 general business meeting, the Board voted to accept grant funds from Harold K.L. Castle Foundation and The Learning Coalition for National Association of State Boards of Education services related to the search and selection of a superintendent, Board strategic planning, process for evaluating the superintendent, and Board professional development. The Board also adopted a timeline that moved the selection of a superintendent to May 2022.
ADVISORY GROUP STAKEHOLDER GROUPS IDENTIFIED
In accordance with the search process, the Search Committee needed to form an Advisory Group to assist the Search Committee with the identification of candidates. The Advisory Group would be made of up individuals representing key stakeholder groups with a significant interest in public education. On August 19, 2021, Search Committee identified stakeholder groups that would be represented on the Advisory Group and the process it would use to select members. The stakeholder groups are:
BOARD HIRES KEITH HAYASHI AS INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT
At its June 17, 2021 general business meeting, the Board took action on the Transition Committee’s recommendation to hire Keith Hayashi as the interim superintendent. The Board hired Mr. Hayashi to serve as the interim superintendent, effective upon the end of Christina Kishimoto’s tenure as superintendent and until the start date of a new superintendent to be appointed by the Board.
TRANSITION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS BOARD HIRE KEITH HAYASHI AS INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT
At its June 3, 2021, general business meeting, the Transition Committee recommended the Board hire Keith Hayashi as the interim superintendent. The Transition Committee’s findings and recommendations can be viewed here. This recommendation completed the work of the Transition Committee.
BOARD FORMS SEARCH COMMITTEE
On June 3, 2021, the Board established a Search Committee tasked with conducting a search of a superintendent. The Board designated Board Chairperson Catherine Payne and Board Members Kili Namauʻu, Kaimana Barcarse, and Lynn Fallin as members of the Search Committee
TRANSITION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS COMPOSITION OF SEARCH COMMITTEE
On May 20, 2021, the Transition Committee recommended that the Board form a Search Committee comprised of the Board Chairperson (Catherine Payne) and the current vice chairpersons of the Board’s three standing committees: Student Achievement Committee (Kili Namauʻu), Human Resources Committee (Kaimana Barcarse), and Finance and Infrastructure (Lynn Fallin). On May 20, 2021, the Board adopted the Transition Committee’s findings and recommendations, including a timeline for the search process.

TRANSITION AND SEARCH PROCESS PRESENTED TO BOARD
On April 15, 2021, the Transition Committee presented its findings and recommendations to the Board for its consideration regarding the timeline and process for selecting and transitioning to an interim superintendent and searching for and selecting a permanent superintendent. In accordance with Sunshine Law, the Board will discuss and take action on these findings and recommendations at a subsequent meeting. (April 16, 2021)
TRANSITION COMMITTEE FORMED
On March 18, 2021, the Board established a Transition Committee to investigate issues relating to a search for a superintendent, including a transition timeline and process, a recommendation for an interim superintendent, a search timeline and process, and the composition of group conducting search. The members of the Transition Committee are Board Chairperson Catherine Payne and Board Members Margaret Cox, Dwight Takeno, and Bruce Voss. (April 16, 2021)
