The Hawaiʻi State Board of Education was established by the Hawaiʻi State Constitution, which grants the Board the power to formulate statewide educational policy. The Board appoints the executive officers of the public school system and public library system, and the members of the State Public Charter School Commission.

2026 NOTICE INVITING APPLICATIONS FOR CHARTERING AUTHORITY
At this time, the Board invites applications from eligible entities interested in becoming charter authorizers. Interested parties must submit an Intent to Apply Packet by 4:30 p.m. HST on June 15, 2026, to boe.hawaii@boe.hawaii.gov, as a single PDF, including any necessary attachments, in accordance with this timeline for the 2026 application cycle.
