About the Board of Education

The Hawaiʻi State Board of Education shall have the power, as provided by law, to formulate policy and to exercise control over the public school system and public library system through its executive officers, the superintendent of education and the state librarian, both of whom shall be appointed by the board; except that the board shall have jurisdiction in a manner consistent with general laws.

Members

The Board consists of nine voting members, one Hawaiʻi State Student Council Representative, and one Military Representative.

Functions

The functions of the Board are described in the Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes. These functions include appointing the Superintendent, State Librarian, and members of the State Public Charter School Commission.

Committees

The Board has three standing committees:  Student Achievement, Finance and Infrastructure, and Human Resources.
