The Hawaiʻi State Board of Education was established by the Hawaiʻi State Constitution, which grants the Board the power to formulate statewide educational policy. The Board appoints the executive officers of the public school system and public library system, and the members of the State Public Charter School Commission.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS AND NOMINATIONS TO SERVE ON THE STATE PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL COMMISSION

The Board of Education (Board) is seeking qualified candidates to serve as a member on the State Public Charter School Commission (Commission) to fill vacancies. The Commission is a statewide charter school authorizer whose mission is to authorize high-quality charter schools throughout Hawaiʻi, pursuant to chapter 302D, Hawaii Revised Statutes.

Interested persons should complete and submit this application form with the appropriate attached documents. Organizations or individuals may also use the application form to nominate individuals and submit applications on their behalf, provided the individual certifies that they authorized the submission. The application, a letter of interest or nomination letter, and a resume must be submitted in a single email to boe.hawaii@boe.hawaii.gov on or before August 27, 2026.

Please note that to be eligible to serve, a candidate must not have been affiliated with any public charter school within one year preceding appointment to the Commission – as a current or previous employee, governing board member, vendor, contractor, agent, or representative – and cannot simultaneously serve as such, pursuant to section 302D-8, HRS.

At the Board’s October meeting, a nomination committee will publicly present the names of the final nominees for appointment consideration. At its November meeting, the Board will consider the nominations and make its appointment decisions. Candidates should plan to begin serving on the Commission as of the date of appointment, anticipated to be in early November.

Written testimony received more than three business days before the meeting will be sent to Board members and posted on the website's meeting agenda. Written testimony received after this time but before the meeting will also be posted on the website’s meeting agenda by the start of the meeting. Any written testimony received after the last posting of testimony before the meeting and up until 11:59 p.m. of the meeting day will be posted as late testimony.
